Underwater Plane Wreck

A few hundred metres off the runway end at Staniel Cay sits the wreck of a small twin-engine plane in less than three metres of water, lying upside-down on the sand. The fuselage is largely intact and easy to swim around; the cockpit and cargo hold are open enough to peek inside.

This is one of the few aircraft wrecks in the world that you can snorkel without scuba gear. Boats from Staniel Cay run by on most circuits of the local sights; bring a mask and a sense of mild adventure.

A story
Local lore says the Curtiss C-46 was a drug-running aircraft that crashed in the late 1980s while attempting to land on a moonless night with no working lights. The wing sticks out of the water at low tide, a memento of the era when the central Exumas were a major drug-smuggling corridor.
