Jitneys are the public minibuses that run fixed routes across New Providence — Cable Beach, downtown, Sandyport, eastern Nassau. Flag one down, ring the bell to get off, pay the small fare in cash on alighting. Service is frequent in daylight, sparse after dark. The Cable Beach and South Beach routes are the most useful for visitors.
Taxis are plentiful and unmetered; fares are set by the government for common routes. Confirm the price before getting in. From downtown to Cable Beach is about US$25, to Atlantis about US$15. The taxi rank at the cruise dock has fixed-price boards.
Driving is on the left (a British colonial legacy), though most cars are left-hand-drive American imports — disconcerting at first. Rental is straightforward; traffic in central Nassau is slow. Walking is the best way to see downtown — flat, compact, and you cover everything in half a day. There is no metro.
