Graycliff Restaurant

Nassau's most celebrated formal restaurant, set in the colonial Graycliff Hotel on West Hill Street. The food is Continental-European with a Bahamian accent — Caribbean lobster tail, grouper with green-mango chutney, foie gras — and the setting is unmatched in the city: gas-lit gardens, antique-furnished dining rooms, a cellar tour included with dinner.

Expensive by any standard. Reservations essential. Tie not required but jackets fit the room. The attached cigar factory is open to visitors during the day — Graycliff makes its own brand of premium cigars on the property.

A story
The 18th-century Graycliff house was once the home of pirate captain John Graysmith and later the Polish governor of West Florida. The wine cellar holds over 250,000 bottles and is the largest in the Caribbean.
