John Watling's Distillery

A small rum distillery in the restored 18th-century Buena Vista Estate house, a few blocks south of Bay Street. The distillery is named after John Watling, the English pirate captain who reputedly ran the Bahamas in the 1670s. They make a respectable range of pot-still rums in a corner of the property.

Free self-guided tours, free tastings, a courtyard bar serving rum cocktails. The grounds are pretty — coral-rock walls, mature mahogany trees, and a small pool — and the place is far quieter than the Bay Street strip half a kilometre away. Open daily; bottles of the Buena Vista rum make better souvenirs than the average Straw Market stuff.
