Paradise Island

A long thin island just north of Nassau, connected to downtown by a pair of high-arched bridges. The eastern two thirds are dominated by the Atlantis resort and a string of luxury condominiums; the western tip is the more public, beachy end with Paradise Beach.

The island has the best beaches in the Nassau area (Cabbage, Paradise), the only golf course worth playing, and most of the resort hotels. There are taxis at every corner; the bridge toll is about a dollar each way. If you are staying in downtown Nassau, a day on Paradise Island is the obvious half-day excursion.

A story
Paradise Island was called **Hog Island** until 1962, when American investor Huntington Hartford bought most of it and renamed it for marketing purposes. The hogs had largely been removed by then.
