Potter's Cay

A long sliver of reclaimed land under the Paradise Island bridges, lined with fishermen's stalls and small wooden food shacks. This is where the mail boats from the Out Islands tie up to unload everything from passengers to chickens, and where Nassau buys its fresh-caught conch and grouper.

Watch the conch stalls split a conch with a hammer-and-spike: the muscle goes into the salad, the shell goes into the heap. The food shacks here — try Chickcharney's or Imperial Take Away — serve some of the best cheap Bahamian food in the city. Best by late morning, when the boats have finished unloading and the kitchens are firing up.

A story
Potter's Cay is built on dredge spoil from when the channel under the **Paradise Island bridges** was deepened in the 1960s. The mail boats that supply the Out Islands have docked here ever since, and the cay still functions as the maritime hub for half the country.
