Historic Centre

The UNESCO-listed historic centre of Bridgetown is a compact district of coral-stone and timber buildings clustered around National Heroes Square and the Careenage waterfront. It takes less than an hour to walk end to end, but the density of history — the Parliament Buildings, the synagogue, the cathedral, the old rum warehouses — rewards a slower approach.

Most of what a visitor comes to see in Bridgetown is here: the Parliament Buildings and Trafalgar Square on the south side of the Careenage, Broad Street running west, Swan Street's market traders, and the Nidhe Israel Synagogue tucked away on Synagogue Lane. The streets between the Careenage and James Street are the best for wandering, with a mix of restored colonial buildings and working local businesses that keeps the area from feeling like a museum.

Cruise ships dock at the Bridgetown Harbour a kilometre to the west and shuttle passengers in, so the historic centre can be crowded mid-morning on ship days. Come at 8am or after 4pm for a quieter experience.
