Fort George Lighthouse

Landmark lighthouse at the tip of the Fort George peninsula

The Fort George Lighthouse stands at the northern tip of the peninsula that juts into the Caribbean, marking the entrance to Belize City's harbour. It is a photogenic white-painted structure and one of the city's most photographed landmarks, visible from the water taxi terminal and the Baron Bliss Memorial nearby.

The lighthouse is no longer operational but serves as a navigational and historical landmark. The headland around it — Fort George proper — is a pleasant place for a short walk, with views back toward the city skyline and out to the open sea. The cluster of institutions around here, including the older Fort George Hotel, gives some sense of what the colonial waterfront must have looked like.
