House of Culture

Former colonial governor residence turned cultural museum

The Government House, now called the House of Culture, was once the official residence of Belize's British governors. The elegant colonial mansion — a white-painted wooden structure in the Fort George neighbourhood — displays antique furniture, silverware, and glassware that once graced the colonial table, alongside works by Belizean artists from the post-independence era.

Beyond the permanent collections, the house hosts concerts, theatrical performances, and art exhibitions throughout the year, making it a living cultural centre rather than a static museum. The grounds extend to the waterfront, with a small formal garden that gives one of the better views of the harbour. Allow an hour.

story: > When Queen Elizabeth II visited Belize in 1985, this house was her official residence during the royal visit — one of the last formal colonial-era stays at the building. Shortly after, it was converted to a public cultural centre, a transition that neatly captures Belize's shift from British colony to independent nation in 1981.
