Practical Information

Currency

The Bermuda dollar (BMD) is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. US dollars are accepted everywhere; you are unlikely to need to exchange money. Change is often given in Bermudian dollars, which cannot be spent outside Bermuda, so avoid accumulating more local cash than you will use. Credit cards are widely accepted.

Visas

No visa is required for citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, or most EU countries. A valid passport is required — a passport card is not sufficient. You will need to show proof of onward travel and a return ticket. There is a departure tax included in all airfares.

Language

English, spoken with a distinctive Bermudian lilt that reflects British, American, and Caribbean influences.

Health

Bermuda has no major health risks. Tap water is drinkable — it is collected rainwater, filtered and treated. The island has the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Hamilton for emergencies.

Safety

Bermuda is generally safe. Petty theft occurs, particularly around the more touristy areas, so standard precautions apply. Moped accidents are the most common cause of tourist injury; take the road conditions seriously.

Electricity

120V, 60Hz — the same as the US and Canada. North American plugs work without adapters. UK visitors need an adapter.

Telephone and Internet

The country code is +1-441. Mobile coverage is good across the island. Most hotels, restaurants, and cafes offer Wi-Fi.

Tipping

Tipping is expected. 15–20% is standard in restaurants. Many restaurants add a service charge automatically; check the bill before tipping again.
