Grande Prairie sits in the far northwest corner of Alberta, a long way from anywhere else. Most travellers arrive by road via Highway 43 from Edmonton (about 460 km, roughly five hours), which is the most direct route. From British Columbia, Highway 2 climbs over the Rockies to Dawson Creek and then drops down on Highway 2 east into Grande Prairie. Many visitors pass through on the way to or from the Alaska Highway, which begins at Dawson Creek 130 km to the west.
Grande Prairie Airport (YQU) is a short drive west of the city and has daily flights to Calgary and Edmonton on WestJet and Air Canada, with seasonal connections to a handful of other Canadian cities. There is no passenger rail service. Long-distance buses serve the city from Edmonton and the Peace Country, but schedules are limited — most visitors will want their own vehicle, both to reach Grande Prairie and to get around once they arrive.
