Grande Prairie sits at 55 degrees north, and the climate reflects that. Summers are short, warm and long-lit — late June through August has daytime highs in the low to mid 20s Celsius and twilight that lingers past 11 pm. This is the obvious time to visit if you want to walk Muskoseepi Park, drive out to Saskatoon Island, or use the city as a launch point for the Alaska Highway.
Winters are long and cold. January temperatures regularly drop below -20°C and can fall much further on clear nights; daylight is gone by mid-afternoon. The compensation is the Northern Lights, which are visible on many clear winter nights from the outskirts of the city. Spring and autumn are brief — the snow lingers into April and arrives again in October — but they are quiet and uncrowded if you happen to be passing through.
