Shoal Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary protects a sheltered stretch of water and shoreline between Sidney and Tsehum Harbour. It is a quiet, low-key place rather than a formal attraction, but birders will appreciate the mix of tidal flats, eelgrass beds, and protected waters used by ducks, shorebirds, gulls, and other coastal species.
Bring binoculars and work it into a waterfront walk or cycling loop. The sanctuary is most interesting outside the busiest summer tourist mood, when wintering and migrating birds give the harbour a different kind of life.
