Sidney enjoys one of the mildest and driest climates on the BC coast, sitting in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains. Summers (June to September) are warm and reliably sunny, with daytime temperatures in the low to mid 20s Celsius — ideal for cycling the peninsula, taking the ferry to Sidney Spit, or whale watching on the Strait of Georgia. Spring and autumn are quiet and pleasant; the light on the water can be stunning in October.
Winter is mild by Canadian standards — snow is rare and frosts are light — but it does get grey and rainy. The bookshops and the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre make Sidney a perfectly reasonable destination year-round, and ferry connections continue through the off-season.
