Getting Around

On foot: Downtown Winnipeg is compact and walkable in summer. The Forks, Exchange District, Centennial Centre, and The Bay are all within a 20-minute walk of each other. The Winnipeg Walkway (skyway system) connects many downtown buildings at second-floor level — useful in winter.

By transit: Winnipeg Transit operates buses across the city. The service is comprehensive but slow — routes radiate outward from downtown, and cross-town trips often require a transfer. The fare is a flat rate; day passes are available. The rapid transit route runs from downtown south along Pembina Highway toward the University of Manitoba.

By bike: Winnipeg has a growing network of protected bike lanes downtown and along the riverbanks. The Forks to Osborne Village route along the Red River is scenic. Bikes can be rented from several outfitters near The Forks in summer.

By car: Easy outside of rush hour. Parking is cheap and plentiful by Canadian city standards. Portage Avenue and Main Street are the two main downtown arteries; the intersection of the two is famously the windiest corner in Canada.

By taxi/rideshare: Cabs are available but rideshare (Uber, Lyft) is the default for most visitors.
