The uptown core is compact and walkable — the City Market, King's Square, Loyalist House, and the main streets are all within ten minutes of each other on foot. The terrain is hilly in places, which is part of the city's character, but nothing is steep enough to be a problem.
Beyond the uptown core, a car is useful. The Reversing Falls are about 3 km from the city centre, Irving Nature Park is about 8 km south, and Rockwood Park is on the northern edge of the city — none are practical on foot from uptown. Saint John Transit buses run to the main areas but frequency is limited and routes are not intuitive for visitors.
Taxis and rideshares are available throughout the city. Most attractions and restaurants accept that visitors arrive by car; parking in the uptown core is available in lots and on street (metered on weekdays, free evenings and weekends in most areas).
