Rockwood Park

Large wilderness park within city limits, with lakes, trails, and a campground

Rockwood Park is one of the largest urban parks in North America, covering over 870 hectares of forested terrain within Saint John's city limits. It feels more like a provincial park than a city green space: the interior has a genuine sense of wildness, with spruce and fir forest, rocky outcrops, kettle lakes, and trails that can take the better part of a day to properly explore.

The park has over 55 kilometres of trails, suitable for hiking, trail running, and cross-country skiing in winter. Lily Lake, near the main entrance off Mount Pleasant Avenue, has a small beach and a seasonal swimming area. The park also has a campground, a disc golf course, and a small zoo. For travellers staying in Saint John for several days, Rockwood is the best option for a half-day of straightforward outdoor activity close to the city centre.
