Ryan Premises is the best place in town to understand the business behind Newfoundland's old salt-cod economy. The 19th-century buildings belonged to the Ryan family firm, one of the merchants that bought, dried, stored, and exported cod from the peninsula. Parks Canada now runs the site, with exhibits that explain the fishery without romanticising how hard the work was.
