Burgeo

Remote Newfoundland outport on a south-coast peninsula, backed by dunes, beaches, and island ferries.

Burgeo is a small outport on Newfoundland's south coast, far from the island's main travel routes. The road in, Route 480, runs through empty barrens and forest before ending at a harbour scattered with islands and coves.

The town is still shaped by the sea. Fishing, ferry traffic, and the weather set the rhythm, and the nearby coast feels bigger than the settlement itself. Sandbanks Provincial Park is the main reason to come: a sweep of dunes, beaches, and walking trails unusual for this rugged part of Newfoundland.

Burgeo also works as a jumping-off point for the isolated communities of Ramea, Grey River, and Francois, which are reached by coastal ferry. For most travellers, though, the pleasure is simpler: a quiet road-end town, salt air, and long empty beaches.

Things to Do

Burgeo's draw is the coast: Sandbanks Provincial Park, short walks around the harbour, and ferry access to roadless south-coast communities.
