Forteau sits on the Labrador side of the Strait of Belle Isle, a small fishing village on the road between the Newfoundland ferry at Blanc-Sablon and the empty country farther east. The village itself is quiet, but the coast around it is one of the better places to feel southern Labrador without committing to a long expedition.
The strongest stop is Point Amour Lighthouse, a tall limestone tower above the strait with views toward Newfoundland. Nearby, the L'Anse Amour Burial Mound reaches much farther back, marking a Maritime Archaic burial about 7,700 years old.
Forteau works best as a slow coastal day. Walk the Overfall Brook Trail, look for whales and icebergs when the season is right, and use the village as a soft landing before or after the ferry.
