Eating Out

Halifax has an excellent food scene anchored by fresh Atlantic seafood. Lobster, snow crab, Digby scallops, and Atlantic oysters are all sourced locally and priced more reasonably than in most of North America. Chowder — a thick cream version with potatoes and clams — is the local standard. The donair, Halifax's unique late-night food, is a pita filled with spiced beef and a sweet condensed-milk garlic sauce; you will find donair shops open until 3am on Argyle Street and Gottingen Street.

The waterfront restaurants tend to be tourist-priced; Spring Garden Road and Agricola Street in the North End have better local-oriented options. The North End specifically has developed into Halifax's most interesting dining neighbourhood over the past decade, with a range of cuisines and price points along Agricola Street and the surrounding blocks.
