Halifax is the largest city in Atlantic Canada and the capital of Nova Scotia. Built on a harbour that ranks among the finest natural ports in the world, it has been a naval and commercial hub since its founding in 1749.
The city punches above its weight for food and nightlife. The waterfront boardwalk runs from the Seaport Market down to the Historic Properties, lined with restaurants, pubs, and the excellent Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Up the hill, the star-shaped Halifax Citadel commands views over the whole harbour. The neighbourhood around Spring Garden Road and the Halifax Public Gardens has the best mix of shops, cafes, and people-watching.
Halifax is a university town with a young population, and the live music scene reflects it. On any given night you can find Celtic fiddle sessions, indie rock, and jazz. The craft beer scene has exploded in recent years — Good Robot Brewing and Stubborn Goat Gastropub are good starting points. The city is also the natural base for exploring the rest of Nova Scotia, with Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg, and the Bay of Fundy all within day-trip range.
