Mississauga Civic Centre

The Civic Centre is Mississauga's city hall — a strikingly postmodern building from the late 1980s with a slim clock tower, a conical council chamber, and a great staircase running up through the entrance pavilion. The complex was one of the city's first attempts at giving itself a centre, before the towers and the Square One mall built up around it.

Inside, a wide public concourse is usually open during business hours. Outside, Celebration Square is the city's main public space — an open plaza with a fountain that turns into a skating rink in winter and a stage for outdoor concerts and a Friday night film series in summer.

A story
The 1987 building, designed by Jones and Kirkland in a postmodern style, was meant to read as an abstracted Ontario farmstead: the tall clock tower as silo, the conical Council chamber as a grain bin, the long block of offices as a barn. The references are clearer in plan than in person.
