Gatineau Park is the obvious half-day or full-day escape — 361 square kilometres of Canadian Shield wilderness beginning fifteen minutes from downtown. The Ottawa River west of the city offers some of the best whitewater rafting in North America — operators run day trips from spring through autumn out of the Foresters Falls area, about 90 minutes upriver. The Diefenbunker at Carp, 35 kilometres west, fills a half-day on its own. Further afield, Montreal and Kingston are both reachable in two hours by car or train for a long day out.
