When to Go

Summer is the obvious season — July and August bring the warmest weather, with daytime highs in the low 20s Celsius, long evenings, and the best access to lakes, trails, and parks. Lake Superior remains cold even in midsummer, so the swimming is bracing rather than tropical.

September brings spectacular fall colour through the boreal forest and into Lake Superior Provincial Park. The bugs are gone, the crowds are thinner, and the air is clear. This is many travellers' favourite time to be up here.

Winter is long, snowy, and dark. From December through March the town is a snowmobile and ice-fishing destination, but if you are passing through for the landscape you may find the highway closed by storms. Spring (April–May) is muddy and ugly except for the spectacle of high water at Magpie Falls.
