Parc Michel-Chartrand

Parc Michel-Chartrand is a large urban park in the Longueuil municipality of Saint-Hubert, covering over 100 hectares of forest, meadow, and waterways. It is the largest municipal park in the Montérégie region and feels genuinely wild in parts — walking the trails through the mature maple and birch forest, it is hard to believe you are fifteen minutes from the centre of one of Canada's largest cities.

The park has a network of cycling and walking paths, a small interpretation centre, and seasonal activities including cross-country skiing in winter. Bird life is particularly good in spring and autumn migration. The park also functions as a rare urban natural reserve — the forest has been left largely undisturbed, and the understory is full of native wildflowers in spring.

A story
The park is named for Michel Chartrand, the combative and beloved Québécois labour leader and social activist who was one of the most prominent voices of the Quiet Revolution era. His memorial here reflects Longueuil's strong working-class roots — the city was historically a centre of manufacturing and union organizing.
