Café Temporel

Old-school French café deep in the Old City, open from morning to late

Address 25 rue Couillard, Québec City, QC G1R 3T2

A genuine neighbourhood café tucked into a side street of the Old City, Café Temporel has been operating since 1974 with minimal concessions to fashion. The room is small, the furniture is mismatched, the coffee is strong, and the croissants are flaky. In the afternoon and evening it becomes a wine bar of sorts; the wine selection is modest but honest. The walls are hung with local art that actually changes.

It's the least tourist-oriented café in the Old City — a place where locals come to read newspapers and argue about politics, which gives it a quality that's hard to find in a neighbourhood this heavily visited. Open from early morning until midnight or later.
