Hôtel de Glace (Ice Hotel)

Rebuilt from snow and ice every January, melts by March

Built each January from 15,000 tonnes of snow and 500 tonnes of ice, the Hôtel de Glace is rebuilt from scratch every winter at the Valcartier resort, about 20 minutes north of Québec City. The temperature inside hovers around -5°C regardless of conditions outside, which means guests sleep in sleeping bags on ice beds covered in animal furs. Beyond the novelty overnight rooms, there are ice sculptures, a hot tub, an ice slide and themed suites. Day admission is available if you'd rather look than sleep. It opens in January and melts in March.
