Chato Volcano

Chato Volcano sits directly beside Arenal and is completely overshadowed by its more famous neighbour — which means it offers a more peaceful, less crowded hiking experience. The trail to the Chato crater lake climbs steeply through primary cloud forest, a humid world of mosses, ferns, and orchids with significant wildlife: toucans, monkeys, and if you are lucky, a resplendent quetzal. The hike takes about two to three hours each way and requires reasonable fitness.

The reward at the top is a pristine crater lake surrounded by cloud forest — genuinely beautiful and almost always uncrowded. The trail starts near the Arenal Observatory Lodge on the south side of the volcano. The climb is steep and can be muddy; good boots are essential. The descent returns the same way, so early starts are worthwhile to make the most of the views before afternoon cloud sets in.

A story
Chato is an extinct volcano that last erupted about 3,500 years ago, and its crater has since filled with water to create one of Costa Rica's most unusual natural features: a crater lake reached only by hiking through cloud forest. The lake sits at about 1,140 metres elevation, completely enclosed by the ancient crater rim. On clear days you can see Arenal reflected in the surface — two volcanoes, one still capable of eruption, the other now just holding water.
