La Fortuna's activities fan out from the volcano — hot springs, waterfall hikes, zip lines, and lava field walks all orbit Arenal. The free hot springs in the Río Chollin are easy to find if you want the volcanic water experience without paying resort prices. Allow at least two full days, more if you plan to do the boat-and-bus transfer to Monteverde.
