Mistico Hanging Bridges

Mistico Hanging Bridges offers a walking tour through a private cloud forest reserve near La Fortuna, crossing a series of suspension bridges that take you through different levels of the forest canopy. The bridges are wide and stable enough for most people, and the views from the higher ones — the volcano in one direction, the lake in another, forest floor far below — are excellent. The trails connect the bridges through about 3 km of well-maintained path.

The reserve is about 18 km from La Fortuna on the road toward the volcano. The tour is self-guided and typically takes two to three hours at a relaxed pace; guided tours are available and significantly enhance the experience by explaining what you are looking at. Wildlife here is good — resplendent quetzals have been seen in the area, along with several hummingbird species and the usual cloud forest mammals. Early morning visits are best for birdwatching and for clear volcano views before the cloud builds.

A story
The hanging bridge concept was developed in Costa Rica as an alternative to zip-lining for people who want canopy-level access to the forest without the speed and noise. The bridges at Mistico are up to 100 metres long and hang 50 metres above the forest floor, putting you at bird height in a primary cloud forest where the silence is broken only by the sound of birds and the creak of the bridge underfoot. On a quiet morning, before the tour groups arrive, it is genuinely tranquil.
