Museum Guanacaste occupies Liberia's old city barracks, a heavy masonry building that says a lot about the province's political and military history before you even step inside. Exhibits and cultural programming focus on Guanacaste identity, regional history and the building's own transformation from army post to civic space.
It is one of the better indoor stops in Liberia, especially in the heat of the day. The museum works best as context before heading out to the province's national parks, beaches and haciendas: it grounds the trip in the cattle country and frontier history that shaped north-west Costa Rica.
