Hot Springs

A natural thermal spring sits about 15 minutes' walk north of the village, off the road toward Herradura. The pools are basic — no development, no entry fee on most days — but the combination of hot water at altitude, surrounded by cloud forest, is memorably pleasant. The springs are particularly welcome on the legs after the descent from Chirripó, which leaves most hikers walking like elderly penguins.

The water temperature varies by pool and by season but is comfortably warm rather than scalding. A small waterfall feeds one of the main pools. Go early or late to avoid the midday crowds that arrive with tour groups from San Isidro.

Ask at your lodge for current access and any charges that may have been introduced — the management of the springs has shifted over the years between private and community hands.
