Casablanca — Christ of Havana

Casablanca is a small village on the eastern shore of Havana Harbour, reached by the passenger ferry from the Muelle de Luz in Old Havana. Its hilltop is dominated by the Cristo de La Habana, a 20-metre white marble Christ figure completed in 1958 — just days before Batista fled the country. The statue is the work of Cuban sculptor Jilma Madera and offers a panoramic view across the harbour mouth, the Morro Castle, and the Havana skyline.

The ferry crossing costs a few Cuban pesos and takes ten minutes — a brief harbour transit that offers one of the best free views of the Havana waterfront. The village itself is small and largely residential, but the walk up to the Christ statue through quiet streets gives a sense of how differently from the tourist centre ordinary Havanans live.
