Valle de la Prehistoria is a strange and memorable stop in Baconao, east of Santiago de Cuba: a valley dotted with large concrete dinosaurs and prehistoric figures. It is not scientifically subtle, but it has the theatrical, slightly surreal quality that makes a roadside attraction linger in the mind.
The site works best as part of a wider Baconao outing rather than a trip on its own. Go with the right expectations and it becomes fun: tropical hills, oversized beasts, Cuban family day-out energy and a break from the heavier revolutionary and colonial history in Santiago itself.
