Playa Limón

Playa Limón is one of the most spectacular and least-visited beaches in the Dominican Republic — a long, curving arc of white sand backed by coconut palms and a coastal lagoon, with mountains rising behind. The nearest hotel is the small Hotel La Cueva, and the beach itself sees almost no development.

Getting there requires a rough drive or a habal-habal (moto-taxi) from Miches — about 20 kilometres along a partially unpaved road following the coast south. The effort keeps the crowds away. Bring everything you need, including water and food, because there is very little for sale near the beach itself.

A story
Playa Limón is backed by a freshwater lagoon separated from the sea by a narrow strip of beach. In winter, humpback whales pass just offshore on their way to the breeding grounds of Samaná Bay — you can sometimes spot them from the beach without any boat at all.
