Playa Bergantin

Quiet Dominican beach east of Puerto Plata, with coconut palms and a rougher feel than the resort strips.

Playa Bergantín is a quiet stretch of sand east of Puerto Plata, away from the resort crowds that dominate much of the north coast. To get here, follow the coastal road east past Costámbar and Cofresí for a few kilometres, then take a dirt track to the left toward the shore. The reward is a near-empty beach lined with coconut palms and backed by low scrub — a far cry from the manicured resort strips further west.

The water is generally calm and good for swimming, though there is no lifeguard and few facilities beyond the occasional vendor selling fried fish and cold Presidente beer. Bring your own shade, water, and snacks if you plan to stay for the day. The beach is popular with Dominican families on weekends but nearly deserted during the week.

If you are looking for a Dominican beach without the all-inclusive package, Playa Bergantín is one of the best options near Puerto Plata. The setting is simple and unspoiled, and the lack of development is precisely the point. You can combine a visit here with a stop at the nearby Fortaleza San Felipe or the Teleférico cable car back in Puerto Plata.

Getting There

Playa Bergantín is about 8 kilometres east of Puerto Plata city centre. Take the coastal road east past Costámbar and Cofresí; look for the unsigned dirt track to the left (north) after passing through the small settlement of Bergantín. The track is passable in a regular car in dry conditions but can be muddy after rain. Motorconchos (motorcycle taxis) from Puerto Plata can take you to the beach junction. By taxi or rental car from Puerto Plata, the journey takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Things to Do

Playa Bergantín is primarily a beach destination — the main activity is swimming, sunbathing, and eating fresh fish at the casual vendors along the shore. The beach itself is the attraction.
