Getting There

Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) is 18 km east of Puerto Plata City, between the city and the beach resort town of Sosúa. Taxis from the airport to the city centre take about 25 minutes and the fare should be agreed in advance; typical prices are in the US$20–30 range. There are no airport buses serving the city directly.

If you are coming from Santo Domingo or Santiago, Caribe Tours and Metro Espreso both run long-distance coach services to Puerto Plata, stopping at a terminal on the southern edge of the city. The journey from Santo Domingo takes around three to four hours depending on traffic; from Santiago it is about ninety minutes. Caribe Tours has the more comfortable buses and more reliable schedules of the two operators. Guaguas — shared minibuses — also run between towns along the north coast and are cheaper but slower and crowded.
