Puerto Plata City rewards those who make time for it. The historic centre has a compact cluster of sights: a well-preserved 16th-century fort, a cathedral, a central park with a Victorian bandstand, and one of the Caribbean's better specialist museums. Above it all, a cable car rises to a cloud-draped summit with a Christ statue looking out over the Amber Coast.
The city's character is in the Victorian-era gingerbread architecture that lines its streets — brightly painted wooden houses with fretwork balconies built during the town's late 19th-century tobacco boom. Most major sights are within easy walking distance of each other; only the Teleférico lower station requires a short taxi ride south.
