Bávaro Beach

The postcard beach — calm turquoise water, white sand, palm trees

Bávaro is the northern end of Punta Cana's 50-km beach strip and the stretch that shows up in every travel brochure. The sand is fine, bright white, and the water is exactly the shade of turquoise the photos suggest — calm, shallow close to shore, and warm year-round. The reef offshore blocks the Atlantic swell, which is why you can wade in without being knocked over even in winter.

The beach backs onto a dense line of resort hotels, which means crowds are inevitable during the day. But arrive early or walk north towards Uvero Alto — where the hotel density drops off — and you can find long stretches that feel almost empty. Vendors walk the beach selling fresh coconuts, jewellery, and tours; it is easier to decide what you want before they approach than to negotiate on the spot.

A story
The offshore coral reef acts as a natural breakwater, keeping the waters inside glassy calm even when the Atlantic is rough beyond — the same reef system that protects Bávaro also covers about 700 square km and supports more fish species than most Caribbean reefs.
