Cueva de las Maravillas

The Cave of Wonders (Cueva de las Maravillas) lies about 15 kilometres east of San Pedro on the road to La Romana, and is one of the most accessible and spectacular natural sites in the Dominican Republic. The cave extends 800 metres underground, reaching 25 metres below the surface, and is fully lit and equipped with ramps and walkways, making it suitable for most visitors.

The main draw is the extraordinary concentration of Taíno rock art — more than 500 images covering the cave walls, depicting animals, human figures, spirits, and geometric patterns. Some of the pictographs are thought to be ceremonial, associated with the zemís (spiritual beings) of the Taíno religion. The guided tour takes about an hour and is excellent — the guides are knowledgeable and genuinely enthusiastic. Bring a light jacket, as the cave is noticeably cooler than the outside air.

A story
The cave contains more than 500 pictographs and petroglyphs made by the Taíno people, the indigenous inhabitants of Hispaniola, dating back over 2,000 years. These are among the best-preserved pre-Columbian rock art sites in the Caribbean — the constant cave temperature and humidity have kept them in remarkable condition.
