Iglesia San Pedro Apóstol

The Cathedral of San Pedro Apóstol anchors the centre of town and is one of the finest examples of ecclesiastical architecture in the eastern Dominican Republic. The current building, completed in 1910, has a dignified neo-Gothic façade that faces a small square popular with locals in the evenings.

Inside, the grisaille stained glass windows are the real treasure — a series of painted grey-tone panels that create an unusual, almost monochrome interior light. The church is generally open during daylight hours and is an easy, worthwhile stop in the city centre.

A story
The original church was built in the early 19th century but the current structure dates to 1910, rebuilt after fire damage. Its collection of grisaille stained glass windows — painted in grey tones to simulate stone relief — is considered one of the most important in the Dominican Republic.
