Estadio Tetelo Vargas

Estadio Tetelo Vargas is the home of Las Estrellas Orientales, one of the six teams in the Dominican Winter League and the oldest professional team in the country, founded in 1910. The stadium holds around 8,000 people and fills up during winter league games from October to January, when the atmosphere is electric and the local pride is on full display.

Going to a game here is one of the best things you can do in San Pedro. The baseball here is serious — winter league rosters include Dominican major leaguers returning to play for their hometown fans — and the crowds are vocal, knowledgeable, and festive. Arrive early and watch local kids working out near the bullpens, a glimpse of the pipeline that has produced more major leaguers per capita than almost any city on earth.

A story
The stadium is named for Tetelo Vargas, one of the Dominican Republic's greatest early baseball players, who played in the 1930s and 1940s during the era of segregated American baseball. He was inducted into the Latin American Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939, long before the major leagues opened their doors to Caribbean players.
