Maurice Bishop International Airport is about 10 km south of St. George's, on the southern tip of the island. It has direct connections to the UK, the US, Canada, and several Caribbean hubs, including Barbados, Trinidad, and Antigua. The airport was built with Cuban assistance in the late 1970s under the Bishop government — its construction was one of the stated reasons for the US invasion in 1983. Taxis from the airport to St. George's take about 20 minutes and cost a fixed rate of around EC$40 (US$15).
Inter-island ferries connect Grenada to Carriacou and Petite Martinique to the north, operated by a small passenger vessel that runs most days. The trip to Carriacou takes about 90 minutes and gives good views of the Grenadian coastline. Cruise ships dock directly at the Carenage in St. George's, making the capital's waterfront very accessible for day visitors — there can be a lot of them when a big ship is in.
