Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

Address Church Street, St. George's

The Catholic cathedral on Church Street dates from 1818, rebuilt after the original was destroyed by fire. It sits beside York House (the parliament building) on a ridge above the Carenage, and its twin towers are one of the defining images of St. George's seen from the harbour. The interior is cool and relatively plain — whitewashed walls, dark wooden pews — but the scale feels right for an island capital.

Church Street in this stretch is worth a slow walk for its concentration of colonial-era religious architecture. The Anglican Church is a short distance away, built in 1825, and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church dates from 1830. Three centuries of competing missionary zeal compressed into a few blocks of steep, narrow lane.
