The Chutes du Carbet are a series of three waterfalls on the Carbet River, deep in the rainforest of the Guadeloupe National Park on the flanks of La Soufrière. The three falls drop 115 metres, 110 metres, and 20 metres respectively through the forest — the tallest is visible from the trailhead car park at Grand Étang; reaching the upper falls requires longer hikes in wet terrain.
The park around the falls is excellent for birding — the Guadeloupe woodpecker (endemic to the island) and the purple-throated Carib are commonly seen along the trails. The vegetation shifts from lowland tropical forest to mountain cloud forest as you gain altitude, with giant tree ferns and bromeliads. The paths can be muddy and slippery; waterproof boots or sturdy sandals are useful. Allow half a day for the full circuit.
