Things to Do

Basse-Terre's two dominant attractions are La Soufrière, the active volcano that looms over the city, and Fort Delgrès, the colonial fortification whose history has become inseparable from Guadeloupe's story of slavery and resistance. The surrounding Guadeloupe National Park is one of the most biologically diverse in the Caribbean, threaded with hiking trails and dotted with waterfalls. The old town's narrow streets and colourful Creole houses reward an afternoon's wandering.
