Sololá sits above Panajachel on the crater rim and holds one of the lake region's most authentic markets. Friday is the big day, when vendors and shoppers come in from surrounding Kaqchikel communities and the streets fill with vegetables, textiles, household goods, and the distinctive local traje worn by many men as well as women.
This is a working market rather than a tourist performance, which is why it is worth the climb from the lake. Minibuses run frequently between Panajachel and Sololá. Go early, ask before taking close photographs, and leave room in your bag if you are shopping for textiles.
