Festivals

Jamaica has a strong festival calendar rooted in its music and African heritage.

Reggae Sumfest (mid-July, Montego Bay) is the island's biggest annual music event and one of the largest reggae and dancehall festivals in the world. It runs for about a week, with major headline concerts and a string of associated street dances and parties around Montego Bay. International acts often appear alongside Jamaican stars. It's a genuine spectacle but book accommodation well in advance.

Jamaica Carnival / Bacchanal (April, Kingston and other cities) is a soca and dancehall-driven carnival with costume parades, parties, and fetes running for several weeks. Kingston's road parade is the centrepiece. It has grown significantly in recent years and attracts a large regional crowd.

Bob Marley Birthday Celebrations (February 6th, Kingston and Nine Mile) mark the birthday of Jamaica's most famous son. Nine Mile, in St Ann parish, is Marley's birthplace and burial site; the annual concert there draws pilgrims from around the world. Kingston's Bob Marley Museum runs events throughout February.

Independence Day (August 6th) is a national holiday marking independence from Britain in 1962. Expect concerts, street parties, and celebrations across the island.

Jonkanoo (Christmas and New Year) is a masquerade tradition of West African origin that survives in some communities, particularly in the rural areas. It's one of Jamaica's oldest cultural traditions and worth seeking out if you're on the island over Christmas.
