Anse de l'Etang

Anse de l'Etang is a sheltered beach on the southern side of the Caravelle Peninsula, protected from the Atlantic swell by a reef but still catching the reliable trade winds that sweep across the headland. The water is clear, the sand is dark volcanic — as on much of Martinique's Atlantic coast — and the setting, backed by dry forest and overlooked by coastal cliffs, is thoroughly attractive.

The beach is the main launch point for windsurfing and kiteboarding on this coast. Rental equipment and lessons are available from a small outfit operating from the beach on weekends and during the trade wind season. Even if you're not a sailor, it's a fine swimming beach and far less crowded than the popular west-coast resorts.

A story
The consistent trade winds that blow across the Caravelle Peninsula from December to April made Anse de l'Etang one of the Caribbean's early windsurfing destinations. In the 1980s, before kiteboarding existed as a sport, this beach was known across the French Antilles as a serious sailing and windsurf spot. The same conditions that made it a windsurfer's favourite now attract kiteboarders, who have largely taken over the beach on windy days.
